The buggies were back and we had 13 runners and riders!

Stuart maintained his recent good form to take the victory with 37 points. Michael N rediscovered some form to take second place with 33 points ((your 7 on #15 was worth 2 points not 1) just pipping Craig on countback.

Only one handicap change:

Mike P up to 19.

ECAP Summer Series

As we head towards the ECAP Summer Series, here’s some information and a few things to ponder and discuss in the post-match drinks next week:

a.       The April-June Series will start on Thursday 4 April and finish on Thursday 27 June;

b.       Tues 2 April will just be a friendly roll-up;

c.       The Apr-Jun Series has a maximum of 22 competition days (excluding Fun Days) and it is proposed that a player’s best 18 scores will count for the Order of Merit. This allows for 4 absences due to holiday, sickness, weather or just to discard a rubbish score (or two)!;

d.       Preferred Lies will remain in place whereby a ball (ON THE FAIRWAY) can be moved from a crap lie and placed (without cleaning);

e.       The maximum handicap allowance will be increased from 40 to 45;

Additionally, a few people have asked about introducing a Match Play Knockout competition.  Craig has kindly submitted a proposed format for consideration (copy attached). As far as possible the match-ups would be played as part of the regular Monday/Thursday gatherings.  Although Craig suggests the scores should not count towards the Eclectic and Order of Merit competitions (largely due to the need to keep two scorecards), I don’t think it would be beyond the wits of our group to do so. If we don’t then the two finalists will lose another 4 scoring chances in the Eclectic/OOM. Anyway, one for discussion.

And, finally, the trophy engraving fund needs to be replenished (it was last funded in December 2021) so the subscription for the Apr-Jun Series will be the regular £5 + £2 (engraving).

I will be away for a couple of weeks over Easter so all comments back to Jerry and Ken!!

Cheers

Stuart

What is it?

1.           This note is a reminder of how it all works.

How Does The Handicap Calculation Work?

2.The software system (which was a one-off purchase in July 2020) allows us to set our own parameters for calculating handicaps. The parameters for eCAP competitions (based on Stableford scoring) are:
a.the winner of each competition will have a handicap cut of 0.4;
b.all players scoring 37 points or more will have a handicap cut of 0.1 for every stroke above 36. For example, if you score 40 points you would be cut by 4 x 0.1. (For the winner, this is in addition to the 0.4 at a. above)
c.players scoring 35 or 36 points will have no adjustment to their handicap (unless you are the winner in which case a. above still applies);
d.players scoring 34 points or less will have a one-off increase of 0.1 to their handicap;
e.there will be a maximum handicap of 40.
3.Handicap adjustments will be applied to all Monday and Thursday competition scores
4.However, in the event that less than 5 players complete a full 18 holes, the competition will be declared a non-handicap qualifying event and no handicap adjustments will be applied.  The result/scores will, however, count for Order of Merit and Eclectic purposes.

UP
What are the Competitions/Formats?

5.Mon/Thu Stableford Matches – These will be based on the handicaps as calculated by the system as described above. There will be a 50p entry fee with the winner taking the pot on the day.  Men will play off the White tees (Par 70) and ladies will play off the Red tees (Par 72).

6.Quarterly Eclectic – An Eclectic competition will be run over a competition period (usually three months).  Eclectics record the best score that you get on every hole within the time-period of the eclectic. The calculation would be based on two-thirds handicap i.e. your handicap (after the final round of the eclectic) is subtracted from your gross eclectic score to give you a nett score at the end of the competition. Scores from Monday and Thursday competitions will be counted.

7.Order of Merit – An Order of Merit competition will run over the same period as the eclectic. It will be calculated on both Monday and Thursday results.  However, to allow for some flexibility in attendance (holidays/sickness/lockdowns/rain etc) only the best 14 placings will count for each individual.  This is out of an estimated 21 competitions in total.

8.Points for the Order of Merit are based on where you finish in the Monday competition and are awarded as follows:

Position

Points

1st Place

15 pts

2nd Place

12 pts

3rd Place

9.The winner will be decided by the cumulative points gained over the period of the competition.

10a.        Buggy Ban – In the event that Hurtmore do not allow buggies on the course then both the Order of Merit and Eclectic competitions will be void on that day. Similarly, any competition that is played (by the ‘walkers’) will be non-qualifying for handicap purposes.

10.The Bottom Four Competition -  The players occupying the bottom four positions at the end of the Order of Merit competition will  play in the ‘Bottom Four Competition’.  To avoid this becoming the ‘Bottom Four Competition For Those Who Played The Least Number of Rounds’, the ‘Bottom Four’ will be calculated on the average score based on the number of rounds played (subject to a maximum of 18 rounds).  The competition will be stableford and the winner will receive a 50% discount on their entry fee for the next Series.

11.Monthly ‘Fun’ Competitions

These will continue to be run on the first Monday of each month. A £2 entry fee applies with the winner(s) receiving a bottle of wine. Scores from the Fun competitions will not count for handicapping, Order of Merit or Eclectic purposes.

Prizes for Order of Merit and Eclectic

12.An entry fee of £5 each quarter will be charged with (roughly) £3 going to the Order of Merit and £2 to the Eclectic. Prizes would be awarded to 1st, 2nd  and 3rd places in each competition. Assuming fifteen players sign up for the Series and prize money* will be as follows:
OOM  -   Winner  £20   Runner Up £12.50  Third Place  £5
Eclectic –  Winner £15   Runner Up £10  Third Place  £5

(*Prize money will be adjusted accordingly if less players sign up)

How To Keep Informed?

13.Reports of results and progress are automatically generated and e-mailed to you after each Mon/Thu competition. This will include details of any changes to your handicap.   You can also see scores and handicaps by logging in to www.masterscoreboard.co.uk and entering’ eCAP’ in the search field before clicking ‘Find Society’. If you are asked for a password it is ‘bonkers’.

Possible future plans

Peggy said...

Every member of Ecap pays a £5 entry fee entitling them to play in the Order of Merit and the Eclectic competitions, yet it is only the 'Buggy Men' who are denied their playing rights on certain occasions particularly in December, January and February through no fault of their own.

Would it not be fairer to all if these tournaments only took place between March and November meaning there would be 3 rounds of competition each calendar year. This would give all members an equal opportunity to challenge for a major trophy.
Fun Days and 50p roll-ups would not be impacted.

Jerry said…

I agree with Peggy’s point about the lack of fairness in OOM and eclectic, but not her solution. It supposes she has a direct line of communication with the weather gods. So here goes…..

OoM

Rather than the person who has played the most rounds winning, almost by default, a simple bit of maths can level things up.

i.e. Total number of points/player divided by number of rounds played = Average points/ round.

If applied to the final OoM table of 22/12/22, it makes for very interesting results. Stuart clearly still wins, but Graham drops from 2nd to 7th, and Bill last place goes up to11th.
I will bring the full table tomorrow for scrutiny.

A minimum number of rounds would need to be set, otherwise Bill could win one game and then disappear of to Spain for 3 months!

ECLECTIC

There must be a mathematical way to  even out forced absences, but I don’t know it. Perhaps a task for GD ?

Or run both comps over a longer time frame. 6 months?

Stuart said… I get where Peggy is coming from

Here's my suggestion:

-  we extend the current Series until the end of April. This would allow for a potential 7 extra scoring competitions.  Currently it's best of 13 for the Order of Merit so we increase it to the best of, say, 15.

-  we then run a normal 3-month Series from May - July

-  we then run a 4-month Series from Aug - Nov

-  from Nov - Feb there is no OOM or Eclectic

-  next year we run 3-month Series (Mar-May, Jun-Aug, Sep-Nov)

Update 29/01/23

Peggy

I suggest that for scores to be submitted for inclusion in both the Order of Merit and Eclectic competitions there must be at least six competitors teeing off from the first. If less than six players start then all scores are void for both competitions.
I do concur with Stuart's suggestions for the way forward but not the other proposal!

Dr Golf says...

Simple solution: if buggies can't go out then OoM and Eclectic do not take place and those who go out just play for the 50p prize fund.

April 25

It's a return to winning ways for Graham as he holds off challenges from Michael N and Jerry (both 36 points) to in with 37 points.

Stuart

April 22

On a relatively high scoring day (across the board) it was the part-timer Mike P who took the swag with 35 points, narrowly beating Jerry on 34 points. He'll be able to afford a couple more weeks off again.

Stuart

April 18

On the first real warm day of the year, it was Graham who kept his cool and romped home with 39 points, a full 5 points clear of Peggy in second place.

Only one handicap change:

Graham down to 21.

Stuart

April 15

Take One: Nine players showed up. Eight tee'd off. Three completed two holes. One completed one hole. Then the heavens opened and play was suspended (and, yes, Michael N, it was due to the weather and not the fact that you had made par and bogey on holes 1 and 2 for an impressive 6 point start).

Take Two: Six players played the back nine for fun and Stuart doubled the prize pot with a smidgeon of his winnings from yesterday's Masters (thank you Messrs Homa and Aberg).

The round ended in the sunshine and it was Peggy who took the honours (and the cash) with an impressive 16 points.

Today's scores were non-qualifying for handicap purposes and the Order of Merit but do count towards the Eclectic.

Hopefully better weather on Thursday.

Stuart

sdsds

April 11

Apologies for the delay. Yesterday's result attached. Graham takes the money with 33 points just beating Michael N on countback. Peggy edged up into 3rd place with an additional point (the 6 on#7 was worth 2 points, not just the one).

Alan K - your handicap is 21 (not 22) hence the one point less on your score.

Stuart

April 8

Fun Game Result.

Northern Pairs was played and Alan D and Luigi won the day with 35 points.. However, there were prizes down to third place.

April 4

No buggies

Only 3 players today.

April 2

The Bums Trophy was played today. Dave L won convincingly, he also nearly claimed the prize pot with his 29 points. He was cheated by Craig with 30 pionts.

Results for the bottom four trophy:

Dave L 29

Ken D 22

John T 22

Peggy T 19

Just in, a note from Jerry...about the fun game on the 8th and money.

Northern Pairs has been suggested. Any other ideas welcomed. There will be prizes for winners, runners up and possibly even 3rd place. After play we will retire to the Monkey Puzzle for presentation of prizes and trophies. I will be collecting £9 on the day corresponding to Fun game £2……OOM/eclectic £5…..Engraving £2.

For those not playing in the Fun Game, could you get £7 to me asap, I'm not playing on Thursday 11/4 and Monday 15/4.

March 28

Due to the extreme weather we have been experiencing, Winter Rules have been extended to May 31st. (Club email)

We will attempt to play the bums trophy on Tuesday.

Only two went out today, JF and AD. They made it to 16th, which they both parred. They then went home very wet but happy.

March 25

Luigi took the loot today with 34 points.

Note: The bums trophy will be played on Thursday by the players in the last tee slot.

Also, Graham and Craig will be having a shoot out for the big money for second place in the Order of Merit.

March 21

Today's result attached. Stuart took the honours with 34 points just coming in ahead of Graham on 33.

Stuart

March 18

Apologies for the tardiness of this result - I got home later than expected yesterday.

So, Graham was the clear winner on Monday with 35 points, a full 5 points clear of Jerry who held off Alan King on countback.

(It was good to see Rick back even if he did appear that he awarded himself a handicap increase - it is 19 Rick, not 20)

Stuart

March 14

It was a magnificent performance from Alan K today who took the swag with an awesome 45 points (equally the second highest ever score).

Stuart

March 11

Fun Game: Helping Hand

Roy 37 and Craig 18 = 55
Jerry 27 and Alan K 26 = 53
Craig 18 and Dave 33 = 51
Ken 25 and Graham 25 = 50

Looking at the winning score from Roy and Craig, it would appear that Craig really needed a helping hand. However, he was being over-worked also playing with Dave.

After the game a vote was taken to remove Helping Hand from the Fun Games page. All present agreed. It has now been removed.

Further, it was agreed that throughout the year we would allow players to move balls on the fairway that finish in divots and unsuitable lies. So, when winter rules end, you can move the ball but not pick it up for cleaning.

March 7

Unbeknownst to each other, Stuart and Jerry were locked in battle for today's prize. Both scored 34 points but it was Jerry who came out on top on countback.

Stuart

March 4

No Buggies

February 26/29

No Buggies

February 22

No Buggies

February 19

In a slightly depleted field (of 9) it was Stuart who came out on top with a somewhat mediocre 34 points. Alan K just pipped Graham for second place on countback (both having scored 32 points).

Only one handicap change:

Stuart down to 9 (!!)

February 15

Another very nice day weather-wise on the course. Stuart brought home the bacon with 35 points and just hangs onto his (10) handicap (9.5).

Stuart

February 12

Despite the welcome sunshine it was a day of relatively low scoring. Alan D came out on top of the pile with 33 points just holding off Mike P and Roy on 32 points apiece.

(I shall be having a word with one of the scorers whose card contained 4 errors (all in their own favour!). No names but they will know who it is when they see their score has been reduced by 4 points).

Two handicap changes:

Alan D down to 21
Jerry up to 18

Cheers

February 8

No buggies again. It looks like only Stuart went out in the rain. He is happy with his winnings.

Goodbye

February 1

Today's result attached. Stuart came out smelling of roses with 35 points, just ahead of Craig with 34 points.

For the third competition in a row there were no handicap changes.

Stuart

January 29

Craig was in a league of his own as he romped home with 37 points. His nearest challenger was Alan D on a measly 30 points.

No changes to handicap.

Stuart

January 25

Hurrah. No frost, no temporary greens and, buggies allowed!

On a sweltering day, it was another day - Alan - who took the 50ps with his 34 points just enough to hold off Stuart.

No handicap changes this week.

Stuart

January 22

Yesterday was quite enjoyable despite the temporary greens (which were actually just temporary holes - there was no green!!).  I think that the buggy ban was a little over-cautious and I see that it was lifted today.

Final scores were:

Stuart 36

Alan D 34

Craig  31

Jerry  26

Cheers

January 18

Only one player went out today, the intrepid Alan Day. Well done Alan.

January 11

Today's result attached and it was the in-form duo - Michael N and Alan D - who filled the top two spots with Michael winning on 35 points (Michael - you need to look more closely at the new handicap indices).

Although two buggies went out, the competition was non-qualifying (for handicaps, OOM and Eclectic) as the buggy ban wasn't lifted until after the first group had tee'd off.

It was cold (and the ground was frozen) and, currently, the forecast is more of the same for Monday.

Stuart

January 8

Fun Game, Sandy Two-Balls, results.

1. MN + LF = 103
2. KD + MN = 98
3. AD + RW = 97
4. CH +GD = 89
5. JT + PT = 44
6. DL + JF = 33

Michael and Luigi shared the wine, Ken was happy with large tin of Quality Street. Alan got some Quality Street as well, for the best score on the day, 54.

January 4

Happy New Year to all!

Jerry took today's swag with a respectable 36 points.

Two handicap changes:

Graham up to 22
Jerry down to 17

Stuart

December 27

Only 3 played and Stuart won. Conditions not good.

Goodbye

P.S, If Stuart asks for an RSVP can you send back to him and not Ken.

December 21

A bit of a one-horse race today (even if I say it myself!!). Stuart romped home with 38 points which was 12 clear of Alan D in second place.

Two handicap changes:

Jerry up to 18
Stuart down to 10

A reminder that the next booking is for Wed 27 Dec. This will just be a roll-up and we'll maybe choose a format once we see who is there. We are not going to the Monkey afterwards.

Then we resume the ECAP competition on Tue 2 Jan and Thu 4 Jan.

Mon 8 Jan will be a Fun Game and a trip to the Monkey afterwards.

Stuart

December 18

It was a high scoring day (for mid-winter). Eight of the nine players who completed 18 holes scored 30+. At the top, two players (Mike P and Luigi) tied on 35 points but it was Mike P who took the honours on countback.

Only one handicap change:

Mike P down to 18.

Crime Alert: The price of coffee has gone up by 30p. The reason: Hurtmore are using (very slightly) larger cups! Tea appears not to be affected; I shall be a converted tea drinker in the New Year!

Stuart

December 14

Today's result attached. Eight started, three fell at the ninth and it was a battle royale between Craig and Stuart coming down the home straight. Stuart managed to hold on to win with 37 points to Craig's 35.

Only one handicap change:

Michael N up to 24 (Stuart hangs onto his 11 by the skin of his teeth (10.5))

Cheers

December 11

Today's result attached. Eight runners and riders and it was Craig who came out on top with a somewhat mediocre 33 points.

Two handicap changes from today's competition:

Roy up to 28
Ken up to 34(!)

As an aside, only four hardy souls went out last Monday so the scores don't count for the Order of Merit or towards handicap calculations. However, they do count for the Eclectic. I have got a scorecard for Graham and Roy. Alan D - do you have the one for you and Michael N?

N.B: I have had a majority response to extend the current Series through until the end of March 2024. So the current Series will now run until Thursday 28 March 2024.  It will, therefore, be a six-month Series (October-March) and the Order of Merit will now be made up of the best 23 scores in this period. Fingers crossed that we can all achieve 23!

Stuart

December 4

Definitely a record today: no one went out. Only SP went to the course.

November 30

Only three went out today, sp, ch, and ad.

November 27

Advance Notice

The Fun Day for December will take place on Thursday 28. Then all off to the Munkey for the prizes. NOTE: given the struggle to get a block of tee times on Thursdays, we might need to rethink this.

A small field today and, with the exception of one player, a lot of small scores......

Craig was the exception and too the £4 kitty with an impressive 38 points. His nearest challenger was Graham on 31.

Two handicap changes:

Craig down to 21
Alan D up to 22

Stuart

November 23

The buggies were back and we had 13 runners and riders!

Stuart maintained his recent good form to take the victory with 37 points. Michael N rediscovered some form to take second place with 33 points ((your 7 on #15 was worth 2 points not 1) just pipping Craig on countback.

Only one handicap change:

Mike P up to 19.

Stuart

November 20

With six finishers, a result table was deemed reasonable (plus there was a chance that the computer system was at risk of rusting over due to lack of use).

Stuart took the honours (but no 50ps or OOM points) with 32 points.

An interesting 5th place finish from John who deployed the stealth mode on his buggy which allowed him to pass unnoticed by the white pick-up van man on the fourth hole at around 1015am. Very stealthy.

Fingers and toes crossed for a return to normal on Thursday.

Stuart

November 16

Not much to report, except that the weather forecast was wrong again and only three people played. They kept their scores to themselves.

November 13

Today saw a record low turn out. Only three players entered the fray. Stuart came out on top with 34 points, Jerry came second with 31 and Alan came home with a mysterious number that shall not be spoken off.

Rumour has it, had it been a normal round, Stuart would have improved his Eclectic place considerably. Shame!

November 9

Normal ECAP golf service was resumed at Hurtmore today and it was Stuart who took the 50ps with a respectable but not sensational 35 points.

Three handicap changes:

Stuart down to 11
Alan K up to 22
Craig up to 22

Stuart

November 6

Fun Game - 666

Jerry Alan D had first pick of the prizes. Alan K and Craig had second pick. Everyone else just enjoyed the great weather, particularly that chilling Hurtmore wind. There was much reflection after the game and now we all know why 666 is the sign of the devil.

Goodbye

OCT 23

Thirty-seven (37) seems to be the magic score at the moment and it was Roy who came home with it today. He did have some competition with both Alan K and Stuart posting very respectable 36s.

Only one handicap change:

Roy down to 27

Stuart

OCT 19

Today's result attached. It did rain a lot and there were several retirements after the 9th hole but it was Stuart who faired the best and came home with 37 points. His nearest challenger was Craig on 30 points.

(I'm not going to mention the misplaced cards.......damn, I did!!)

Only one handicap change:

Luigi up to 28

Stuart

OCT 16

Graham and Luigi had a tussle over the cash today, both had 33 points but Graham took the cash on countback.

NOTE: If you are looking for course status updates don't bother with the course website, go to How Did I Do. Jack seems to know how to do updating. At 8.00 frost was preventing buggies going out, at 9.00 the ban was lifted.

OCT 12

AD took the money today but MN was only 1 point behind, 37 to 36. Well, that was the best of things, no one else managed 30 points.

Rain was forecast for most of the day, that did not happen and the wind was slight. So we can't blame the weather.

OCT 9

With one exception, the good weather did not bring accompanying good scores.

Today's victor was Alan K with an impressive 39 points (an extra point for the 6th hole where you were mistakenly scored 6-1 when it should have been 6-2 (not bad considering his tee shot went OOB!!).

The closest challenger was Michael N on a measly 32 points. Alan D went up to 31 points (your 5 on hole 6 being worth 3 points not two). Any other changes were down to poor mathematics.

Only one handicap change: Alan K down to 21.

Oct 5

The new Series started today - I will send out a separate note reminding everyone of how it works - and it was a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard with Graham taking the money with a fairly unspectacular 34 points.

Nice to see that all scorecards were correct and proper.

Coloured Balls All Round

1st    Graham (41)/Jerry (57)  =  98 points

2nd   Roy (37)/Stuart (59) = 96 points

3rd   Michael N (45) mystery man Roy(37) = 82 points

4th    (55)/Ken (39)/Luigi (39) = 78 points

5th  John (40)/Alan K(38) = 78 points

It was tight at the top today with some good individual scores. Jerry came home smiling with a fine score of 57 but he was out-smiled by Stuart with his 59. He called it his best ever game on this course.

September 25

Good turnout today, with 11 runners and riders. Graham took the cash on count back from Craig, both had 35 points.

We now have our four players for the Prestigious Bums Trophy

JF, SP, JT, AK

AD and LF will be first and second reserves.

September 21

The buggy bans have started. We see a drop of rain but White Van Man sees a tsunami, trees, foxes and golfers being washed down the A3.

The upshot for eCAP, only five went out, the buggy boys wasted their time.
From now on, phone the course before you travel - you know the their course status will not be up to date!

September 18

Luigi took the honours today, with a glorious 33 points. Safe to say that the weather took its toll on the scores today but at least everyone stayed the course.

September 14

Roy took a day off today. A major battle ensued between the Doc and JF. It came down to the last hole, JF was one point ahead, both players were on the green for two (the Doc outdrove JF for a change). Oddly, JF managed to put the ball down in 2 putts, the Doc took 3. He should not have taken a sandwick break on the 9th.

September 11

Another pay day for Roy B. However, there was much competition for the three pound on offer today. The degree of competition on display highlights just how bad the cost of living crisis is now in England.

September 7

Well done to AD, who finished with 38 points. Everyone reached 30 plus today, bar one, no names, no pack drill.

A buggy came out with some cold soft drinks - the prices were silly. No discount for members?

Double Six with a Triple Twist

1st    Graham (55)/Craig (48)  =  103 points

2nd   Roy (51)/Alan D (49 = 100 points

3rd    Stuart (55)/Ken (41) = 96 points

4th    Mike P (43)/Luigi (47) = 90 points

5th    Jerry (54)/Michael N (31) = 85 points

6th    Jerry (54)/John (30) = 84 points

August 31

We saw an outstanding performance from Roy today. He won the John Tickle Trophy with 43 points. GD and SP both came in with 38 points. It was a good turn out today. It rained all the way but it was light and there was no wind.

August 29

37 seems to be a magic number. Today, it was Graham's turn to enrich himself. A battle royal took place between JT and the Doc. Both finished with 36 points, the Doc got second place on count back. Also, we saw the return of the stent brothers, AK and Roy. They both made a reasonable return to the game.

All we need now is Rick, Peggy and Bill.

August 24

MP did it again with 37 points, the closest competition were two points away in the shape of AD and MN. The good news was that 7 of the 9 players managed to get into the 30s. Also, it's worth noting that the fairways are now repairing the damage from the winter and greens are in excellent condition.

August 21

MP took the cash today with a creditable 39 and once again GD was pipped at the post with 38 points. He should have spent less time coaching AD to a new course record and focused instead a new record for himself. Although a new record did look likely when AD finished the first nine with 24 points. However, JT took the applause today with his 100 yard birdy on the 8th.

And surprise surprise, while we where sitting outside an apparition appeared - it was Bill. He was back from the clutches of the NHS but not yet ready to enter eCAP's twice weekly tussles. He will be jetting off to Spain again for three weeks

August 17

Dr. Golf came up with the goods today and made off with the swag bag containing £2.50. The winning score was 32 points, which was just as well, Graham's crew all came home with 31 points.

Apropo of nothing in particular but I phoned the club to change our tee times to the 29th and spoke to Will. I was only on the phone for a minute and a half. Maureen needs to give that boy a pay rise.

August 14

Craig did it again, winning with 37 points. He narrowly beat GD by one point again. We only had eight players today. Luigi wants to know what's going on. If anyone knows send me the details for publication here. However, we managed to get round again without getting wet - all good.

P.S. Dave's blobs tally cannot be surpassed.

August 10

Well done to Craig for a fine win today with 39 points. GD and MP came close with mid-thirty points scores. Course conditions were good and ball was rolling well.

The weather was unexpectedly good today and pretty much windless. Surprisingly, there were more drivers in evidence than we have seen in the past. GD opted for an iron and very nearly came out on top. However, few if any can match SP's driving power, he's clearly been using his bull-worker and following that on-line Charles Atlas course.

August 3

Michael N showed everyone the way home again. That is five wins so far this series. Today the weather was good, warm, with no rain. And better, we were able to play 1 through 18 holes.

July 31

For the record, Alan D took the money with 33 points. It would be good for everyone to cross their fingers for a full 18 holes on Thursday. Messing about with 8 cards, without improving anyone's ecletic score by accident is a very large pain. Goodbye

PS. Michael would like winter rules reinstated immediately.

July 27

Well done to Michael N today, he put in a fine performance with a score of 37. He and SP were neck and neck on the 18th tee but Michael won the hole with a 5 to SP zero. The weather was quite good, it was wet but nothing to write home about.

With a bit of luck we will be able to go round twice on Monday but don't expect putting conditions to be good.

July 24

The rain was heavy today. The more sensitive types packed up at nine to dry out. Who was in and who was still out became confusing. However, Mr P, as usual after a lengthy rest, paddled in to win the pot. Dr. Golf has invested his winnings for him.

Two notes:

Buy yourselves a decent water proof jacket, not from Hurtmoor.

Also, be aware, we do not need any new eCap members.

July 20

MN returned an excellent 40 points today. The Committee are considering mandatory drug testing. Dr. Golf was asked for a comment on MN's third win this series. He said: "Bollocks".

July 17

Well done to Roy who came home with 35 points today. This win was much needed for Roy following his miserable outing at the weekend, 23 points? We were all at tenterhooks in the clubhouse, waiting for the last group to finish. MN was sitting there with a top score of 30. Dr. Golf considered harakiri.

July 13

Universal balance has been restored, Dr. Golf took the swag today. Straightness, with woods and irons, and precision putting seemed to be the answer. Which, as you know, adds up to Total Golf.

July 10

Clearly, playing with the best has obviously rubbed off on Michael as he takes the cash again with a fine 39 points. Unlucky for Roy, with 38.
We only had 8 players today. However, the committee did find the time for a meeting to discuss the latest Course Survey. It was decided to reject it.

July 6

Seven started and six finished.

Reigning Champion Michael N took full advantage and romped home with 36 points with Craig in second place with 34 points.

Only one handicap change:

Michael N down to 24

Fun Game Results

Today Helping Hand was played. MN and RW came first with 72, SP and AK came second with 70, CH and KD came in third place with 67, JF and RB were fourth with 63, GD and JT were in fifth place with 62, DL and MP came in last with 61.

After the game we had a meal at the Monkey. Then we did the prize giving. The big money this time went to MN who won both the Order of Merit and the Eclectic and pocketed £40.

Most importantly, the prestigious Bums Trophy went to CH. He seemed mighty pleased to have to pay only £2.50 for the next series.

June 29

The prestigious Bums Trophy, played today, was won by Craig, with an unbeatable score of 33 points. The money today, once again, went to Luigi.

A vote was taken on the Fun Game for Monday and Helping Hand won the day.

June 26

If you weren't there you missed another demonstration of Total Golf from the Doc, who finished with 39 points, no one else came close. After the game we had a birthday party for Stuart who finally managed to reach 60 years. There was cake for all and SP received a ticket for a lesson with the course pro.

birthday

June 22

Luigi took the cash today (I will hand it over on Monday) with a solid 37 points, MN came in second with 36 points. There was no wind today and the heat was oppressive, no one collapsed although JF couldn't hit a straight ball, this may have been due to an internal collapse. Alright, I'll admit it, I love the word collapse.

N.B. When parking at the Monkey be sure to register your vehicle at the machine just inside the door. Otherwise you will get a parking penalty. JT will fill you in.

June 19

Roy went mad today, returning a score of 45 points. On the same team MN and RW came home with 42 and 43.

Note: MN's picture on the Photo Gallery has now been corrected.

June 15

Well done to Graham who took the cash today with 36 points. Jerry came in second with 35 but no-one ever remembers who came second. Also, well done to our faultless markers, the machine reported no errors.

June 12

The Return of Total Golf

The Doc provided a superb demonstration of how the game should be played today. Unusually a driver was in evidence and allowed 17/18 drives to go straight down the middle. A ball was lost on the 9th tee but the Doc just used the time to take a sandwick break rather than look for his ball. Graham provided a superb sparring partner all the way home. Thanks mate!

P.S. Bill says he will respond if anyone would like to contact him.

June 8

Today's result attached and it's a mightily impressive 43 points from Michael N that won the day. An eagle on #7 and a birdie on #18 were the cream on an otherwise impressive cake all round.

Fun Game Results

Today Las Vegas pairs was played. Jerry and Mike P came out on top with a score of 119 - nobody likes show-offs. Stuart and Graham came in second with 108 - no one ever remembers who came second. In third place came Luigi and Michael with 94, amazingly they managed a round without arguing the odds. Roy and the Doc came in a comfortable last place with 88 and an excellent display of how not to play golf.

However, everyone enjoyed the day and there were prizes for all, well done to Jerry.

June 1

Some good scores today but it was Roy who took the money with an impressive 39 points. Michael N and Alan K pushed him hard with both finishing on 37 points.

Only one handicap change:

Alan K down to 21

(Roy managed to hang onto his 31 by the skin of his teeth!)

Stuart

MAY 30

Today's result attached and it was Michael N who led the field home with a very respectable 38 points.

Stuart

Note: On Monday 5, our Fun Game will be Las Vegas Pairs. £2.00 to enter. Prizes for everyone!

MAY 25

Apologies if you get this twice but my copy never arrived so I'm assuming no-one got it........

On a glorious day for golf it was Jerry who took advantage of the conditions and romped home with 36 points. And with over half the field getting into the 30s it is clear that the Hurtmore bounce is back!

No changes to handicaps this week.

Stuart

MAY 22

Luigi rocked the boat today and came home with an almighty 40 points. Michael N was second with an (almost) equally impressive 38 points.

Only one handicap change:

Luigi down to 26

Stuart

MAY 18

It was a much improved overall performance today with half of the field getting into the 30s. Alan D came out on top of the pile with 36 points jut pipping Stuart on 35pts.

No handicap changes this week.

Stuart

(PS. Shorts' season is now officially open!)

MAY 15

The Doc took the swag with a resplendent 28 points.

The Hurtmore wind struck again, well it struck the few who still had some sense and feeling. Anyway, we had a good turn out today with 12 doing their best with the new course set up. If they put the tees any further back we will be playing from the neighbours gardens. However, the Doc discovered the secret of playing a golf course set up for low handicappers. That is, Aim don't just Hit the ball, get some Chi and apply it to your short game - confidence and not thinking is the key.

N.B. we had two instances today of people playing the wrong ball. Mark your ball sufficient to be seen easily. Also, check the rules on lifting a ball to identify it.

MAY 11

"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"

It was not! CH took the swag with a lowly 29 points. Craig did toy with the idea of a roll over but only momentarily. He needed to be compensated for his handicap reduction.

Note: The late tee times on Monday.

MAY 9

Weather wise, it was a great day, no rain and no wind. The scores were interesting, we ended up with three 32s from GD, MN, and CH. Graham came out on top after countback.

We had a discussion on winter rules and took a vote, this was won by those members who wanted to stick to club rules. So don't start moving your ball if you don't like your lie.

MAY 4

Generally the scores were much better today. AD took the money with a respectable 37, with a bit of help from the Doc. PT came a close second with a decent 36. MN managed 34 but blew out on the back nine with only 13 points - he simply couldn't locate his Chi. And Jerry had a funny turn on the 15th, putting his second shot in the pond to the right, dropping a ball and hitting it straight into the tree on the edge of the water - guess where the ball ended up.

NOTES:
For eCAP, winter rules still apply. Also, don't try to play off of the concrete found in some places on the course, move the ball onto some grass.

We are planning to have a special Fun Game for Monday June 5 - see Jerry for details.

Fun Game results

Well done to MN and JT for an excellent win today.

MN 60 + JT 43 = 103
CH 50 + LF 45 = 96
JF 43 + GD 39 = 82
PT 29 + AD 29 = 58 yellow ball lost on 6th hole
KD 21 + RB 26 = 47 yellow ball lost on 1st hole. Outstanding!

April 27

On yet another low points scoring day, there was a tie at the top with both Michaels on 31 points. It was Mike P who won on countback with a front nine of 17 Compared to Michael N's 18.

Only one handicap change:

Graham up to 22

April 24

DR. Golf says: Tuesday 2 will be our next Fun Game. 1-2-3 Best Ball (last played 08/08/22) has been suggested by GD. We need a back up if we don't get the numbers. Suggestions on a postcard please.

It was another day of (very) low scoring and, ultimately, it was only Stuart who made it into the 30s and won the day with a meagre 31 points. John was second on 29 points (originally it was 30 but an accounting error on the front nine reduced it by on point. And your magnificent 5 on Hole #12 was, indeed, only worth 4 points, not 5).

Stuart

April 20

A slight improvement in he scores today with six players making it into the 30s (compared to two players last week). It was Michael N who came out on top with 34 points just pipping Stuart on 33.

Only one handicap change. Unsurprisingly:

Michael N down to 26.

Stuart

April 17

Apologies again for the slight tardiness of this result but, to be honest, the scores were nothing to write home about anyway!

Only two players (Mike P and Craig) made it into the 30s and it was Craig who took the spoils with 35 points.

Three handicap changes:

Luigi up to 27
Michael N up to 27
Stuart up to 12

Stuart

April 13

After a three-way tie at the top between Luigi, Jerry and Graham on 32points, it was Jerry who took the money on countback.

April 11

Today's result attached. In a reduced field of just 10 players, it was Stuart who came out on top with an unremarkable 35 points.

Message from SP...Fun Game results

Monday's 'fun competition' was a pairs '666' - a mixture of foursomes, greensomes and better ball.  With only 7 players showing up for the draw, a random draw was made for one player to play in two teams. That random player was Stuart who played in one pair with Ken and the other with Mike Perry.  Handicaps for each pairing were 50% of the combined total.

The results were as follows:

1st Place -  Mike P/Stuart  41 points

2nd Place - Ken/Stuart      38 points

3rd Place - Jerry/Roy         35 points

4th Place -  John/Michael N  29 points

It was good to see a good turnout at the Monkey Puzzle for the prizegiving and the food was both good and great value-for-money as usual.

The trophies have now been engraved and I'll hand them over tomorrow.

Regards

Stuart

March 30

There were only six attendees today. Luigi and Michael set off as a two ball, following a dog slow inter-club comp'. The Bums Trophy four, KD, JT, JF and RW, decided by the time they had reached the 5th green, that 9 holes would be an excellent idea, given the rain and wind and slow play ahead. The upshot, there was only ever one winner, KD came home with 21 points, to announce an historic second victory in the most prestigious of eCAP trophies. Luigi and Michael pushed on to the 18th - credit to them. Incredibly they both came home with 26 points, which Luigi won on countback.

Also, I complained again to Maureen about the course status being wildly out of date on JT's phone. She checked her phone and it gave the same answer: "Last updated 17 March". She disappeared then Jason came in and told us that their IT company were looking into the problem. Now, we wait to see if anything changes - Correctly.

March 27

Jerry provided the results for today manually. He not only calculated the competition results, he also recalculated all the handicaps. He also updated the OoM and Ecletic tables.

Roy took the money today with 37 points.

Order of Merit Top five take note...

GD 149, RB 122, SP 113, CH 100, LF 99

Ecletic Table top positions, these are unlikely to change on Thursday....

CH, GD, AD, SP, RB

March 23

Dr Golf says...

Well done Luigi for taking the cash with 35 points. Mr North was boshed by countback, he also came home with 35 points. His card said 34 but the machine noticed he had only given himself 3 points on the 15th for parring the hole.

March 20

It was another good day for Mr Day as he romped home with 38 points. Graham maintained his fine recent form with another second place with 36 points.

Two handicap changes:

Alan D down to 21
Luigi up to 27

Stuart

March 16

Fortunately the computer agreed with today's provisional result and Graham is confirmed as the winner with 34 points (beating Ken on countback).

Only one handicap change...Stuart back up to the heady heights of 12.

Stuart

March 13

On a bracing day, it was Luigi who best mastered the conditions and his 34 points was enough to beat Graham (also 34) on countback.

Only one handicap change: Luigi down to 26.

Stuart

March 9

Only two hardy souls (Stuart and Alan D) made it round today though the ever optimistic Johnny did turn up (just-in-case).

The weather was quite good until the 15th hole when, admittedly, it did get a bit wet. It was a close contest with both players scoring 28 points but Stuart winning on countback (last six holes as they were tied on 15 points each after the front 9).

With no buggies and only two finishers the match was non-qualifying for anything (handicap, OOM, eclectic etc)

And the round was completed in 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Stuart

March 6

Fun game today, Two clubs & putter, with a pink ball and penalties included.

Dr. Golf writes:

There were only eight runners and riders today. The conclusion was a close run affair. Stuart and Luigi finished with 103 points. However, they faced an indomitable duo, in the shape of Ken and Craig, who breezed in with 106 to take the wine home.

Stuart writes:

Hi All,

Yesterday's victors in the Two Clubs and a Putter (with a coloured ball thrown in) were Ken and Craig.  Here's the full result (with individual points scores in brackets):

1st   -   Ken (51)  &  Craig (55)   =  106 points

2nd  -   Stuart (50) & Luigi (53)  =  103 points

3rd   -   Michael N (50)  & John (36)  = 86 points

4th   -   Mike P (25)  & Roy (34)   = 59 points

Mike and Roy lost their coloured ball on the 6th hole and Michael and John lost theirs on the 16th.

Cheers

March 2

Uh oh! It's happened again.........

Today's battle was between the two Alans (Day and King). The provisional result went to Alan K with 40 points but, on closer inspection, a bit of slack arithmetic showed that he only had 39 points, the same as Alan D. Moreover, Alan D had the better countback. So, Alan D is today's winner. (Fortunately Alan K went home before the provisional result was declared!)

Stuart

February 27

It was a day of high scoring with Peggy taking the honours with a remarkable (for the time of year) 41 points. Graham and Alan D were tied for second place on 38 points with Alan edging ahead on countback.

Two handicap changes:

KD up to 32
PT down to 32

Stuart

February 23

Today's result attached. It was back to the full, regular 18 holes today (phew!) and it was Stuart who rediscovered his putter and took the win with 38 points. Alan K showed a return to form/fitness with 36 points in second place and Craig was third with 35 points (your 5 on the 8th hole was only worth 2 points not 3).

A great pace of play today with all 4 groups coming in at around 3hrs 15 mins.

Two handicap changes:

Stuart down to 11
Roy up to 31

Stuart

February 20

Yesterday's result attached. Apologies for the slight delay: playing the back nine twice proved a little taxing in terms of getting the scores into the computer (well, getting the scores in was easy but getting the right result wasn't!!).

Anyway, Craig was yesterday's winner and, indeed, his victory was even greater as the computer awarded him an extra two points (you get two shots on the 14th Craig so your 6 for 1 became a 6 for 2 and your 5 for 2 became a 5 for 3). So Craig was the runaway winner with an impressive 40 points with his nearest challenger being Alan D on 33.

Let's hope we are back to a regular 18 on Thursday!

Only one handicap change. Unsurprisingly Craig goes down to 20.
Stuart

February 16

Today's result attached and, once again, it's a returning holidaymaker who scoops the pot as Alan D romps home with 37 points. Stuart was second on 35.

A great pace of play today with all groups coming in between three and a quarter and three and a half hours. Also impressive was the fact that there were no errors on any of the scorecards today!

Have a good weekend.

Stuart

February 13

Today's result attached. There were quite a few errors on the cards. So many that I won't list them here but I will bring the cards along on Thursday but any incorrect challenges will attract a fine of £1!!

Despite a couple of points deduction, Roy was still the winner with 38 points though it did mean that Craig pushed him very close with his 37.

Another good pace of play today and credit to the fourth group who clearly upped their game on the back nine to squeeze in under 4hrs.

Stuart

February 9

Today's result attached and it's congratulations to Mike P who romps home with 40 points - a full 5 points ahead of Jerry in second place.

I'm sure that we were all pleased to see Alan K back today (even if you had to be more cautious again when standing on an adjacent fairway).

A reminder that Hole#15 is now a Par 3 not a Par 4 (which explains the one point deduction from both Craig and Alan).

Finally, Mike hangs onto his 19 handicap by the skin of his teeth (18.5).

February 6 - Triple lockdown fun game

The Fun Game today was won by JT & KD. The pair provided a superb demonstration of Total Golf, Synergic Positivism and Zen No Mind.

Evening all,

Here’s the results of Monday’s Triple Lockdown competition (individual scores in brackets):

1st -   Ken (42) and John (56)  = 98pts

2nd – Mike N (43) and Jerry (52) = 95pts

3rd -  Roy (45) and Luigi (48  = 93pts

4th  - Craig (47) and Graham (46)  = 93pts

5th  - Peggy (32) and Dave (52) = 84pts

6th  - Stuart (45) and Mike P (35) = 80 points

So, congratulations to Ken and John and especially John who was the highest scoring individual on the day.

Only downside of the day was that two groups came home in around 4 and a quarter hours. Let’s not slip back into bad ways…………

See you Thursday.

Stuart

February 2

And here's the result of yesterday's competition which saw Luigi pip Jerry on countback as both players finished with a crediable 39 points.

In fact it was good scoring all round as there was only one score under 30.

Two handicap changes:

Jerry down to 14
Luigi down to 26

Stuart

Also, revised Jan 30 result...

Here is the revised result of the 30 January competition (after John revealed that the scorecard was actually wrong and that he was not . therefore, the winner). Graham was restored to first place with Roy finishing runner-up.

Important - whilst Johnny's honesty is, of course, very welcome, retrospective changes like this are not. Everyone has a responsibility for ensuring the scores submitted on the scorecard are correct. You can either:

a. keep your own card and cross-check it with the 'official' scorer at the end of the round, or,

b. simply trust the 'official' scorer and accept that what they've put on the card is correct.

Either way, the scorecard that is submitted by the 'official' scorer will be final from now on.

Stuart

January 30

I hope that you are sitting comfortably, there's a lot to get through.

First, it has been decided that only competitions where buggies are able to participate will count for the Order of Merit and Eclectic. Plus, only these competitions will count for handicap adjustment purposes.

Accordingly, handicaps were reset to the end of the last Series and adjusted by the only 'eligible' competition (12 January). So any pluses or minuses this year where buggies weren't present have been discarded. This provided the starting point for yesterday's competition.

As far as I can see, the only person unduly affected by this was Craig whose starting handicap yesterday should have been 20 not 21. This was reflected in his points score (down from 32 to 31).

Second, for only the second time in ECAP history, the provisional result has been overturned by the computer. Graham was the provisional winner with 37 points just pipping John and Roy on 36 points. However, when the scores were entered, there was an error with John's score - he was awarded 4 for 2 on the 17th (which is now a Par 3) which should have been 4 for 3. John's overall score was, therefore, 37 and he pipped Graham on countback.

So, congratulations to John but you'll have to wrestle Graham for the 50p's.

Two handicap changes after yesterday:

Craig up to 21
Stuart up to 12

Finally, a reminder that the Stroke Index on holes 15 and 16 have been reversed. Hole 15 is now Stroke Index 7 and Hole 16 is Stroke Index 5. This explains the adjustment to Alan D's score (down from 36 to 35).

I have amended scorecards if you are doing the scoring and think that you might forget.

Otherwise, it was great to see an almost full turn-out yesterday and that all four groups came in under four hours. Long may it continue!

Stuart

January 26

Closing the course after the damage has been done could be described variously but let's just call it reactive, ineffectual and unimpressive. A bit like that glove puppet squatting in Downing Street.

Other news, Bill is nolonger a member of the Club. He is waiting for some medical attention and then he will be waiting for the outcome of treatment, before he joins the Club again and gets some new batteries for his buggy.

January 23

A historic moment took place today, no, a unique moment took place today. Only one lone golfer ventured forth into the misty frozen vastness and survived. He sent his card in for verification and set off for home ecstatically happy, having netted the 50p pot.

January 19

When the ice comes, the icemen cometh (well, two of them anyway!).

On what turned out to be a very pleasant day, only Alan D and Stuart braved the conditions (and traffic).

Both players had good rounds and shot creditable 34s. Stuart took the win on countback but didn't insist on taking Alan's 50p......

As only two players finished, the competition was non-qualifying for handicap purposes. Both players agreed that it wouldn't count for Order of Merit points but any improvements to eclectic scores would count (and there were a few).

Stuart

January 16

On another 'buggyless' day, it was Stuart who came out on top of the 9 walkers with a creditable 35 points.

In fairness to the Club, it probably was the right decision not to allow buggies out but that will be of small comfort to the riders out there I know.

Hopefully Thursday.....

Stuart

January 12

In an unusual turn of events, buggies were allowed out today which saw the ECAP numbers swell to 8. Alan D and Jerry packed up after 9 (maybe another dental appointment...?) but six finishers provided a quorum for the OOM and Eclectic.

Graham ran out as the winner with 31 points closely followed in by Stuart on 30.

Stuart

January 9

The new Series got off to an inauspicious start as the weather (and a dentist appointment (really Jerry!?)) decimated the field. Six players completed all 18 holes and it was Rick who came out on top with 33 points with Stuart in (his usual) second place on 32 points.

The scoring all got a bit complicated due to the temporary holes that have been created whilst work is carried out on the bunkers on hole #16.

There are changes to holes 15, 16 and 17 as follows:

Hole 15 is now a Par 3 and for ECAP it will be stroke index 7
Hole 16 is now a Par 4 and for ECAP it will be stroke index 5
Hole 17 is now a Par 3 and will remain stroke index 17

I have managed to effect a change to ensure the scoring is correct when entered onto the computer (though I don't know yet what will happen when/if I have to change it back before the end of the Series!!)

I will bring some amended scorecards for use on Thursday.

December 29

A Happy New Year to you all!

A little belatedly (tardily!?), here is the result of last Thursday's roll-up. Mike P was the winner with 34 points. I'm sure we were all very happy to see Mike back..........

No changes to handicap as this was just a fun roll-up.

Fingers crossed that we don't get a lot of rain overnight and we should be good to go again tomorrow for another friendly roll-up.

Stuart

Xmas message from Bill

Merry Xmas to you and all Ecap members. It is not clear how successful the hand operation has been. Its healing and I have been able to do some work on the roof covering ( See pics front and sides complete just the back to complete). (Only one pic received, KD)

billpic

I am not sure if it is good or bad news but my foot problems has worsened and it is pretty consistent now. They have come to the conclusion that it is my back that is causing the problem. So hopefully if the op is successful in January that will be sorted as well.

With family Xmas then to Spain for old year ( Subject to strikes). Return 12 Jan will then pop up  on one of your golf days for a catch up.

I trust all are well have a great Xmas and see you in the New Year

Very Best Regards

Bill

December 22

Hooray! A golfing day that wasn't decimated by the weather! Nine players went out and 9 players came home. Stuart took the money with 35 points but the most of the focus was on the Bottom Four Tournament which was competed for by Ken, Roy, Luigi and Michael N.

In the end it was Roy who became the seventh different winner of the trophy with a creditable 32 points just holding off both Luigi and Michael with 29 points.

Only one handicap change: Stuart again becomes the least popular person to be paired with in the Fun competitions as he goes back down to 11!

Stuart

December 15

Today's result attached and, again, it was Rick who proved the most adept with the crampons. Rick came home with 31 points which is even more creditable when I tell you that we only played 14 holes! Stuart was second with 29 and Alan D third with 13 (for 9 holes only).

No Order of Merit points but Eclectic improvements will be recorded.

Monday is looking more promising provided you have a good set of waterproofs!

Stuart

December 8

The Icemen Cometh....... It was Rick who coped with the icy conditions and led home the field of four players with a very respectable 33 points.

The pace of play changes again saw the group finish in just over 3 hours 30 minutes and they even had a two-ball let them play through!

Fingers crossed for cold weather but no frost next Monday,

Stuart

December 5

Fun Game - Northern Pairs

This game was a big success, no complaints from anyone. The game's rules were easy to follow and the game was quick to play. Well done, to Roy and Jerry (Mr Countback) they took the Champaign. Although, Roy declined and put his bottle back in the pot. So, the committee has decided to supply a tin of chocs for Roy.

Results

RB + JF = 32, SP + GD = 32, LF +CH =32, MN + PT = 28, KD + AD

NOTE: I didn't have the cards, so if I've got anything wrong, blame someone else. Dr. Gof

December 1

From the mist and fog it was Graham who emerged as today's winner with - in the conditions - a creditable 34 points. Stuart assumed his regular mantle of being bridesmaid with 30 points.

Next Monday is Fun Day competition and Christmas attire is encouraged.

November 28

Today's result attached. Jerry's break in the sun appears to have done him the world of good as he takes home the money with 34 points.

It was another well-paced round with all four groups coming home in under 3 hours 40 mins. Let's keep it up.

Only one handicap change. Unsurprisingly, Jerry down to 14.

Stuart

November 24

Good to see the Buggy Boys back today. However, it was one of the aqua-golf team who mastered the conditions and Alan D romped home with 35 points. Craig was second (31) and Stuart (30) third.

The pace of play was excellent with all four groups getting round in about 3 hrs 45 mins. Let's keep it up, especially when we get back into four-balls. But well done everyone today - Maureen was happy!

The only small additional observation to add is to be aware of where you leave your golf bag/buggy. With the quicker play (especially playing off the tee) try not to leave trollies/buggies in area that prevent tee-ing off (examples might include at the front of the greens on #s 2, 5 and 15). Not a great problem but just another little thing that could shave a couple of minutes off the rounds.

Stuart

November 21

The weather took its toll again today but seven members turned up for 9 holes of aqua-golf. It was Stuart who took the honours with 19 points (originally it was 20 but he had forgotten that he had been cut back to 11 last week so didn't get a shot on the first). His guilt was alleviated a little when the second place finisher - Rick - was also docked a shot with his 5 for 3 corrected to 5 for 2 on the third hole.

As only 9 holes were completed the competition was a non-qualifier for handicap purposes but did count for Order of Merit and Eclectic.

Finally, Stuart took the 50p's but will add the winnings (£3) to the next pot which features the buggy boys (let's hope we don't have to wait until next summer......!!)

Stuart

November 17

Six hardy souls were able to go out to play (the 'no buggies' rule having decimated the field). It was Stuart who came out on top with the only score in the 30s (31). As all six players finished the competition counts for handicaps, OOM and eclectic. Stuart also took the £3 in 50ps though whether it was worth it for the subsequent handicap cut only his bank manager will know!!

Stuart

November 14

The rain stayed off and we saw our first 40 point score of this Series as Craig marched home with 40 points. Stuart was second on 37 points (having made the turn on 24 points). Michael N rounded out the top three with the only other score in the 30s (33). Stuart

Thanks to SP for his detailed account of the Fun Game results. Dr.Golf

November 10 Fun Game

Chicago Pairs has been removed from the Fun Games page following a torrent of tears from the losers. They failed to see the funny side of the game. Whereas, John and Ken were chock-full of merth throughout the round and on receiving the wine they were brim full, overflowing with laughter and disbelief.

November 7

Craig became the latest recruit to the aqua-golf society as he joined Stuart and Alan D for today's round. After a lengthy discussion,it was agreed magnanimously that the three-ball would not play the Fun Competition (which will now take place on Thu 10 November). It was also agreed that Order of Merit points would not be claimed but that any improvements to the eclectic scores would count (though in the event I don't think any improvements were achieved!).

Stuart came out top on the notional scorecard with 32 points followed by Craig on 30 points and Alan on 26.

As a non-qualifying event there were no changes to handicaps.

Hopefully normal service will be resumed on Thursday.

Stuart

November 3

Today's result attached. Only 3 competitors were brave/stupid enough to turn up but they were rewarded with a dry day and not too soggy conditions underfoot.

It was agreed at the outset that we would forego any Order of Merit points but that any improvements to Eclectic scores would be counted.

The winner on the day was Alan D with 31 points with Stuart second on 30 and Mike P third on 25. So two-thirds of the field made 30 points which is an improvement on recent weeks......!!!

With only three competitors the competition was non-qualifying for handicap purposes.

Stuart

October 31

Things are improving.......six players made it into the 30s today but it was still a meagre 34 points from Mike P that took the prize pot!

Stuart

October 27

Today's result attached. Once again we had one individual who got slightly carried away. Bill romped home with 37 points which was six clear of his nearest competitor (Alan D with 31 Points). Only one other score in the 30s (Jerry, on 30). Goodness knows what the scores will look like when winter actually arrives.......

Notwithstanding his win, Bill managed to hold onto his handicap (23) and there were no changes anywhere.

Stuart

October 24

The elements conspired to reduce today's field to just 6 competitors. It didn't really help with the scoring as, yet again, it was a below average 34 points that saw Craig take the almighty £3 pot of 50p's. Stuart was second on 32 and Mike P was promoted to third when the computer revealed some schoolboy arithmetic on his scorecard.

Despite his win, Craig managed to hold onto his handicap.

Stuart

October 20

Today's result attached and, once again I can hear the computer groaning as I punch in the scores....!

With just 35 points, Jerry is today's winner. Stuart is second with the only other score in the 30s (33). Even four and a half hours wasn't long enough for some players to break 30.......

Stuart

October 17

Again the winner tried far too hard with Rick coming home with 37 points, 4 points clear of his nearest competitor (Stuart) on 33 points.

Unsurprisingly, the handicapper took a dim view of the 37 points and Rick is the only handicap cut this week going down to 18.

Stuart

October 13

Today's result attached and it's a win for Mike P with a respectable 37 points. The field was again lagging well behind the winner with the nearest challenger being Graham on 33 points.

For the second week running there are no changes to anyone's handicap. It's all very unusual......

Stuart

October 10

Today's result attached. Rick bucks the recent trend to win with a reasonable score (38 points). He didn't need to try quite so hard as his nearest competitors were Stuart, Mike N and Alan D who all finished with 31 points. Everyone else continues to be stuck in the 20s.

Rick's handicap survived by the skin of its teeth and, unusually, there were no handicap changes this week.

Stuart

October 6

The new Series is up and running and it's Mike P who takes the opening round with a less than impressive 35 points. There were some woeful scores on the front 9 but, encouragingly, everyone seemed to have picked up on the back 9 (though Michael N picked up his ball more than most....!)

Stuart

October 3

FUN GAME results

1. SP29+MN38 = 67
2. GD27+KD32 = 59
3. JF16+JT38 = 54
4. MP23+RB30 = 53
5. CH19+KD32 = 51
6. AD19+PT31 = 50

Note: KD was GD's mystery player.

Well done to Stuart and Michael, Michael in particular was consistant throughout the round, playing Stuart's drives. MN's putting was also on the button. Overall, judgeing by the scores for the A group, (on the left above) it seems they were shockingly unprepared and unfamiliar with the terrain they found themselves in.

Dr. Golf says, proper preparation prevents poor performance.

September 29

Well done to Dave for his 34 point win of the prestigious Bums Trophy. JT came close to making it a second win of the Bums but ended a couple of points behind.

Also, well done to PT, she took the money today with 35 points.

Order of Merit result
Peggy proved to be a runaway leader in the end with 182 points. Graham was second on 160 and Ken held off the challenge from Jerry to retain third place.

Reminder

Jerry will be collecting £5.00 for the next series + £2.00 for the Fun Game on Monday.

Stuart's account: a eclectic epic

Although no-one knew it, the eclectic turned out to be the most exciting final day event. Realistically there were four players in contention: Stuart, Craig, Jerry and Graham with Stuart holding a slender 0.3 lead at the top.

Craig made the first move with a par on the 9th (despite going into the trees from the tee) to take the lead at the top. Neither Jerry nor Stuart were able to improve their scores over the 18 holes. So it was looking good for Craig as Graham had also failed to improve his scores after 17 holes and would need to birdie the 18th to overhaul Craig. Well, knock me down with a feather (or Luigi's buggy), if he didn't do just that....a birdie on the 18th to steal the win with the very last putt of the very last round. Well played Sir!

Craig held on for second and poor old Stuart went from first to third!

Stuart

September 26

Advance notice: Jerry will be collecting £5.00 for the next series + £2.00 for the Fun Game on Monday next.

Second attempt. Ignore the previous result (and I can't even blame Ken this time!).

So, Stuart was still today's winner with 35 points and the scores were still dismal overall but there was only one error on the cards (Mike P your 5 on Hole 12 was still worth 3 points not 2).

Luigi your handicap is 26 and remains 26 but there are two other changes:

Alan D up to 23 and Craig up to 21.

Fingers crossed it's right this time....

Stuart

(Too many away days - Dr.Golf)

Updated Order of Merit. With only one round to go Peggy can be declared the winner (twice in a row) and Graham will finish in second place. Third place will go down to the wire between Ken and Jerry with Ken holding a slight advantage at the moment.

The Bottom Four Competition will be held on Thursday and the qualifiers are: Alan K, Dave, Mike P and John. If any of these are not available on Thursday then Alan D is the 1st Reserve.

Well played Peggy.

Stuart

UP

September 22

Well done to Craig, who won today with 36. This was the highest score we have had for a couple of weeks. We also had two 35s, from Michael and Ken.

Check out the Fun Game page if you haven't already done so, in preparation for Monday Oct 3. Fun Games page

Also, the Proton campaign is making progress, we still have five hold outs but hope springs eternal here in the Close.

September 20/21 v.2

Only eight starters today. Graham stormed to victory with an inglorious 34 points. Generally, scoring was lowly across the board.

The OoM table is looking interesting, as we come to the end of another series. GD is closing on PT in first place, and KD has evicted JF from third place.

Update: Wed 21, GD is not closing on PT, who has now gone stratospheric but JF is still out in the cold this winter.

Note: Monday 3 October will be our fun game and trip to the Monkey. (Tee times have been changed to facilitate this.)

The plan is to play Helping Hand - See Fun Games page

September 15

Whilst scoring was slightly better today - six players managed to get into the 30s - it was another lowly 34 points haul that took the winnings with Stuart pipping Graham on countback. The win was Stuart's first of the current Series.

September 12

It's official......today's scoring was rubbish!!

The winner, with a measly 33 points was Craig. Only 5 of the 15 players managed 30 or more points (Mike P - your score was one less as your 5 on the last was worth only 2 points, not 3).

September 5 Fun Game

Yesterday's fun game was Sandy Two-Balls. This format was last played in February where Ken and Craig were the winners with 126 points.  In a strange co-incidence - given the large number of points on offer - yesterday's winners were Jerry and Mike P with......126 points!

Full result:

1st  -  Jerry (59) & Mike (67)      126 points

2nd - Stuart (68) & Alan D (55)   123 points

3rd - Craig (51) & Roy (59)         110 points

4th - Ken (58) & Luigi (46)          104 points

5th -  Rick (63) & Michael N (30)  93 points

6th -  John (47) & Dave (27)         74 points

As far as I am aware, Dave lost his coloured ball early on but everyone else managed to steer their coloured balls as far as the 18th where there were a number of casualties.

Play was a little slow yesterday - four and a half hours is not necessary (or fun) - let's not make it a habit.  Ready golf and three minutes to look for balls (even if they are coloured!).

On Thursday it's back to the serious business of the Order of Merit and the Eclectic. Seven more attempts to improve your standings.

See you Thursday.

Stuart

September 1

Wonder Women Peggy swept the competition aside to win the J Tickle Trophy with a new course record of 46 points. She also ran off with the swag. JT was gracious enough to buy all present a drink.

Breaking news : PT and GD will not be joining us for the Fun Game

August 30

Craig took the money today with a decent 38 points, well done. Peggy continues to forge ahead in OoM, with Jerry and GD in the mix. The next Fun Game will be played on Monday 5, we will be playing Sandy Two-Balls

August 22

Another superb exhibition of Total Golf today from Dr. Golf. The Doc finished on 37, just one point ahead of PT and our man in the North.

August 18

Well done to Mike P today, he took the money and blew it all on an over-priced Hurtmore sandwich.

August 15

Great golf today, with an internal competition arising with five people on 36 points. Sorry Peggy you lost that argument but get used to it, the Doc is back. Did I mention Dr. Golf, he finished with 44 points, he took the money, winning enough to visit the Asda car park a dozen times and laugh at fat families.

August 11

Jerry stole the money today over a nine hole special, due to evolution. Most people put in a decent score over nine but JF made off like a cat burglar with 21 points. Ok, that's twice he has been mentioned. If you want more on our man in the North, see the results from the 8th.

Stuart commented: In the battle of the four survivalists, Stuart came out on top with 37 points but, as only 4 people completed 18 holes the competition was non-qualifying for handicap purposes so no handicap changes for anyone.

Also, you will find two games revamped by SP on the Fun games page.

August 8

FUN GAME RESULTS

1st - Jerry/Bill/Graham 87 points (45 out/42 back)
2nd -Craig/Mike N/Rick 79 points (42 out/37 back)
3rd - Dave/Stuart/Ken 78 points (45 out/33 back)
4th -Alan D/Peggy/John 77 points (44 out/33 back)

August 4

Good golf today, with three scores 40+. Peggy took the money with an impressive 43 - well done.

August 1

Excellent performance from our man in North Farnborough today. He managed 40 points with two blobs on the card.

July 28

Great win from LF today with 42 points. GD was at it again with 40 points but the big story today was JT's 40 points, which gained him a long overdue handicap cut - well done John.

July 25

Good high scoring round today, with everyone at 30 plus. However, RW rode off like Dick Turpin with the swag, and a mighty haul it was, given we nearly had a full house in attendance.

July 20

GD and MN took everyone by surprise with some top scoring. GD finished with 42 and MN had 38. PT was having a day off and JF decided to maintain his handicap.

July 18

Only nine holes were played today, no one collapsed. Hurtmore is now playing like the Old Course and KD was able to take advantage of the conditions to cruise to victory with 19 points.

July 14

Well done to AD, who finished with a tidy 43 points today. PT and RW came in very close behind with a 41 and 40 respectively.

July 11

Peggy won today with 39 points, CH and JF both finished on 38 and as usual JF took second place on count back.

And the bad news for you all, Dr Golf is back up to 32.

July 7 - The new series kicked off today and AD roared to a win with 41 points. We also had two players with 38, JF and GD. And PT continued to be consistent with a 37.

July 4 - Fun Game

Two clubs and a putter today provided a superb challenge, especially with the ball running like mad on the concrete hard fairways. At the end of the match SP and KD both finished on 35 points. Both were furnished with decent bottles of wine at the Monkey Puzzle, where we all enjoyed 2 for 1 meals for a tenner.

June 30

Great end of series finish for PT, and her first win, scoring 43 points. Peggy won the OoM with 185 points, KD came second with 166 and GD was in third place with 164 points.

CH topped the Ecletic table, with JF in second place and AD in third place.

And the prestigious Bum's Trophy was a close run thing between AK and AD. Both finished with 33 points but AK took the trophy on count-back.

June 27

Luigi did the triple, winning again with 40 points today.

Peggy picked up a couple of points today in the OoM and that makes her uncatchable at the top but we have a tie between KD and GD to be thrashed out on Thursday for second place.

CH tops the eclectic but JF in second is capable of some madness on the last day.

A lucky four players will compete for the Bums Trophy, setting off at 9.56

June 23

Luigi's handicap now comes down to 26, having taken the cash twice this week. Peggy waltzes off in the OoM, beyond the event horizon with a 17 point lead over Ken and GD is sneaking up on the rails, just 7 points behind in third place. Two more games to go?

June 20

Luigi took the cash today with 37 points. Generally it was another low scoring day? No matter, we have other matters to focus on.

The next Fun Game will be on Monday July 4. We will be playing two clubs and a putter. We are aiming to get the tee times for one hour earlier. Then we intend to shoot down to the Monkey for a meal and prize giving for this series. By the way, this series ends on the 30th June.

June 16

Not much to write home about with today's scoring. Only 8 players showed up and Jerry lead the way home with 37 points. I blame the sun......

Jerry is the only handicap change, down to 15 (again).

Stuart

June 13

Today's result attached and it's a highly commendable win for Michael N with 43 points. The nearest challengers on 37 points were Craig, Graham and Peggy.

June 9

On a day of some solid high scores, it was Stuart who pipped Peggy to the money on countback. Both scored 38 points but Stuart's 22 on the back nine saw him snatch the win.

A few errors on the cards (Craig you had one more point on the front nine (just an arithmetical error), Rick - your 5 on the 10th counted for 2pts and not 1, and Mike N - your 3 on the 3rd hole was only worth 3 pts not 4).

Two handicap changes:

Stuart plunges back into the darkness of 11
Luigi up to 28

JUNE 6 Fun Game Results

Half points were not included - four teams didn't bother to keep track. Ultimately, it wouldn't change the winners, such was their margin of victory.

Here are the placings:

1st  -  Peggy(68)/Mike P(63)  = 131pts

2nd -  Stuart (49)/Alan K(63) =   112pts

3rd  - Rick (54)/Ken* (51)      = 105pts

4th -  Jerry(51)/Ken (51)        = 102pts

5th -  Luigi(47)/Craig(51)        = 98pts

6th -  Mike N(47)/Dave(42)     = 89pts

7th -  John(34)/Graham(54)    = 88pts

*  Ken was Rick's 'mystery partner'.

June 1

Bill popped in today for some pocket money, for another trip to Spain. 37 points was enough for a win today, we hope he enjoys his trip, if his plane ever takes off?

May 30

Fortuitous my left foot! The Doctor's win had more to do with the concept of Zen 'no-mind' than fate, as well as, some decent putting. Well, done to everyone today for fighting through the storm.

May 26

AK has been back to his Tibetan retreat again, he took the money this time with 42 points. Overall, the scoring today was much better all round than in recent rounds. Peggy managed to increase her lead at the top the OoM to 12 points. This was due to KD not putting any sugar in his coffee, so he was forced to persevere with a flask of tasteless muck.

May 23

Unstoppable, indefatigable ((key planks of the 'total golf' ™ (trademark pending) philosophy)), the doctor struck again. PT charged away on the first nine with 23 points, six ahead of the doc' but fell at the last hurdle, and finished with one point less than the doc' - 39 to 38.

May 19

Dr. Golf took the money and provided the crowds lining the fairways with an excellent exhibition of 'total golf' ™ (trademark pending), finishing with 39 points.

May 16

MP went mad today with a score of 43 points, he also got a nice handicap cut. The storm clouds looked menacing much of the way round but we didn't get wet.

May 12

RW took the money today with 38 points. JF, GD, and MN came close to challenging, all with 36 points. But here's the real stop press moment, GD beat JF on count back.

Craig took the cash today with an excellent 40, we also had two 39s from PT and RW - the latter was mighty pleased with his performance, I can tell you. When I say Craig took the cash, that's not correct since I still have the money - perhaps he wants next Thursday to be a rollover? I'm sure he'll let me know.

After the game we voted by majority to leave winter rules in place and rejected the R&A ruling.

May 3

AD cruised home with a nifty 40 points, no one else came close but there were several mid-thirties scores - the ball was running well. Peggy played well to score 36 points and maintain her lead at the top of the Order of Merit.

At a hastily convened meeting it was decided that the Fun Game on Monday next will be Coloured Balls All Round.

April 28

AK came back from his recuperative break at a Tibetan retreat to take the money with 41 points. Craig managed 40 points without a Tibetan sojoune. Peggy stays at the top of the Order of Merit but KD is has closed the gap to two points. And Craig continues to top the Electic.

April 25

SP won today with 35 points, beating PT on countback. However, PT went to the top of the Order of Merit and CH still tops the Eclectic.

The best part of the day occurred after the game, when a mystery birthday cake appeared, accompanied by the happy birthday tune.

April 21

Graham was resting today, this left a blackhole of opportunity for Dr Golf to surge to a higher dimension and grab a bulging cash bag, leaving SP at the event horizon with a lowly 37 points.

Advice from the Doctor... don't just hit... Aim!

April 19

Today's competition result attached and it's a return to form for reigning Order of Merit Champion Graham who takes the win with 40 points. Impressive showings from both Peggy and Dave who came in second and third with 38 points.

Stuart

April 14

AK took the money today with a fine 38 points. PT, AD, and LF came close, all with 36. Also, keep an eye on Luigi, now top of the Order of Merit. Stuart and Graham are still resting.

April 11

A mightily impressive 43 points sees Ken take the win a full 4 shots ahead of Rick in second place.

Stuart and Graham appear to be resting on their laurels (whatever that means!?)......

April 7

The Opening Day of the Sixth ECAP Golf Series saw Michael N take the honours with 40 points. A particularly good score in the windy conditions. Luigi came second with 34 points beating both Mike P and Stuart, who both also scored 34 points, on countback.

April 4

Today's fun game was won by SP and KD with 87 points. SP was driving like John Daly and KD was finishing like Seve Ballesteros. An unbeatable combo'.

March 31

The final Eclectic Table of the Jan-Mar ECAP Series is attached. Alan K hangs on for victory with a Net total of 51.3. Stuart is second on 52 and Mike P is third on 54.7.

The final Order of Merit table for the Jan-Mar ECAP Golf Series is attached. After an epic tussle, the winner was decided on the very final green of the final match and it was Graham who held his nerve to gain the point that tied him with Stuart but gave him the win courtesy of countback on the day. The win was enough to give Graham an overall win in the OOM by 205pts to Stuart's 203. Peggy was a comfortable third place with 162 points.

In the Bottom Four Trophy it was John Tickle who took the honours with 20 points (only 9 holes were played) edging Michael N into second place on 18 points.

Let's hope that the next Series is just as close/exciting.

Stuart

March 24

No-one in the 40s today but Michael N scored an impressive 39 points to take the money. Mention in dispatches for Rick who had his best placed finish of the year coming second with 37 points.

Remember it's an early start on Thursday (first tee time 0832) and we're off to the Monkey Puzzle afterwards for a bite to eat and some prize-giving.

March 24

Outstanding performance from JF today, 43 points, and usefully he won nearly enough to purchase a book on Absurdity from Amason. In fact, four players had 40 or more today. Well done, make the most of it, the whites are coming back.

KD

March 21

On a day of high scoring, a scintillating front nine (24 points) saw Peggy hang on to win with 41 points just pipping Alan D who had an impressive 40 points. Well done Peggy.

March 17

Today's competition result attached. With 39 points, it was Luigi who took the honours with Graham in second place on 37 points.

Luigi's handicap goes down to 28. Craig's handicap goes up to 23 (again!)

Stuart

March 14

Today's competition result attached. Nice to see some new names at or around the top of the leaderboard. The two Mikes were tied on 39 points but Mike P comes out on top on countback (I'm sure Ken will give you your money one day......).

March 10

On a high scoring day - all 9 players broke into the 30s - it was Graham who continued his recent fine and romped home with an excellent 43 points. Chasing him all the way were Peggy and Craig who both scored a credit-worthy 40 points each.

Unsurprisingly both Graham and Craig suffer handicap cuts both down from 23 to 22. No other changes.

Well done to Graham, again. Although his winnings were meagre, not even enough to buy a Eurolotto ticket. I've got one and if you don't see me Monday, it will not be because there's no buggies allowed. It will be because I'm visiting my new friends at Camelot House in London.

Goodbye Dr Golf

Feb 28

Today's competition result attached. We managed to get round the back 9 twice (the front nine being closed for course maintenance) but what I didn't realise was the problem that 2 x Back 9 creates for entering the scores!!!!!!!!

However, I have now worked it out though there may be a (very) slight delay in issuing the updated eclectic table since I'm having to create a dummy competition (you can all keep your quips to yourself about that!).

Anyway, today's winner, by a country mile, was Graham with a new record of 45 points. Fortunately for the rest of us, his playing handicap has come down by two strokes from 25 to 23. There were no other handicap changes. Luigi was his closest challenger with a mere 37 points.

I won't be there on Thursday so can I just ask the scorers to make clear on the scorecards which scores are the first nine and which scores are the second nine. This will help immensely with the score input (and assumes that you will have to play the same nine twice again).

Ken will collect scorecards but you will have to wait until Friday afternoon for the formal result notification.

Stuart

Feb 24

Well done to Mike the resilient, who took first place and won the grade sum of nothing. Only 6 went out and 6 returned, everyone else stayed home, wrapped in a blanket.

Don't forget, 9 holes on Monday, due to course maintenance, let's hope that means filling in some holes and reinstating the white tees.

FEB 21

Eight (8) (fool)hardy souls started out but only 4 finished the full 18 holes.

Stuart topped the scoring with a miserable 32 points, closely followed by Craig (31) and Graham (30)

Rules is rules.... no handicap changes as a result of today's competition

With only 4 players completing the full 18 holes, Rule 4 applies, namely: in the event that less than 5 players complete a full 18 holes, the competition will be declared a non-handicap qualifying event and no handicap adjustments will be applied. The result/scores will, however, count for Order of Merit and Eclectic purposes.

Stuart

Feb 14

The weather scuppered the 'buggy boys' so only 7 hardy souls walked the course. Leading from start to finish was Peggy who went out with 22 points and just about managed to hang on with a final total of 36 points. Graham was second with 35.

There were two bits of good news for those that didn't play. First, you didn't have to suffer a 5 hour round (we were following a Valentine's Day competition) and second, Stuart finished bottom of the pile with 27 points!

No handicap changes this week.

Stuart

Feb 10

Oh, no, not again!

It was a high scoring day (11/12 players scoring 30 or more points) the 18th hole proved to be the deciding factor. Stuart made a par on the hole for 3 points whereas the his 3 closest rivals could manage only 2 points (between them!). So Stuart took the money with 39 points just pipping Luigi with 38 points.

No handicap changes this week.

Stuart

Feb 7

Oh my, a Fun Competition that was actually fun!!

In a tight contest, Ken and Craig took the victory by a solitary point from Graham and Luigi.  As far as I can tell, only 3 coloured balls were lost:  Michael N on the 3rd,  John T on the 6th and Alan D on the 18th.

The full result was as follows:

Ken/Craig   126 points

Graham/Luigi  125 points

Alan D/Alan K  113 points

Stuart/Peggy   106 points

Jerry/John   105 points

Alan K/Mike N   91 points

The highest individual points scorer was Jerry with 67 points followed by Luigi with 66.

In the 'Guess the Winning Score' competition, Stuart was closest with a guess of 128. However, since he was donating the prize, it was Graham who took the chocolates with the next best guess of 130.    Luckily for Ken, his golf was better than his prediction (156 being just a little wide of the mark!!).

Jan 31

It was a runaway win for Luigi who stormed to victory with 38 points, a full 6 shots ahead of Alan K in second place. A mightily fine showing given the conditions.

Jan 27

Well done to MN, who took the money with 36 points. He pipped SP on countback - natural justice.

Bring back the white tees Maureen!

Jan 15

Stuart took the money, he'll soon have enough to retire.

The Club has finally got itself chef for a few days a week. So now Jerry can have his eggs on toast once a week.

Jan 14

Well done to AK who finished with a nice 38 points. Unfortunately the buggy boys were kept off the course due to frost. They did allow buggies later in the morning. So, in future I intend to go over to the club for the second half, on the off chance they will lift the ban.

Jan 10

Well done to Jerry for setting the bar higher with his 43 polints and to John with his 36 points. I think it's about time we all upped our game.

Jan 6

Well done again to GD, pocketing £2.50, clearly the training received from Dr Golf is paying dividends. Unfortunately, the Doc has been in touch, his bill has not been paid and he says GD will not be receiving any help in future. Happy New Year

Jan 4 Fun Game

The Champagne went to SP and BS.

None but the brave started, was it in fact the magnificent seven, would they be able to go toe to toe like Jake LaMotta with the crippling elements, would they be able to deny the pain of frozen fingers. Well, actually, none but four lunatics went all the way, the smart people bailed out after 12 but the loonies soldiered on. A battle was afoot, KD and MP forged ahead, against all odds. It was all square at 17, MP's tee short disappeared, KD's ball nested on the leaves to the left. The rest is too dreadful to recount. The final score: SP+BS 33, KD+MP 29.

Dec 20

Today saw a glorious demonstration of how the game should be played by GD. He simply made the whole thing look ridiculously simple. He was of course coached all the way round by Dr. Golf - that may have had something to do with his win. I understand an invoice is on route to the cottage.

Dec 13

The final result of the Sep-Dec ECAP Golf Series is confirmed with Stuart once again taking the pot with 38 points.

Eclectic Series: 1st Jerry, 2nd Mike P and 3rd Craig first

Order of Merit
1st Stuart
2nd Graham,
There was an almighty tussle for third place between Jerry, Peggy and Michael N. Jerry and Peggy finished tied for third on 164 points with Michael just one point further adrift on 163.

Bottom Four Play-Off
1st - Alan D 32 points
2nd - Bill 31 points
3rd - Mike P 25 points
4th - John - 16 points.

Also, the bookers will not be booking again until the Dec 21 for Tuesday 4th of January. This will be our next fun game, no details yet. Bill suggests we play pairs and swap handicaps?flask

Whisky Galore, Mr Perry has gifted a large bottle of Black & White, so bring along a flask on Monday. No empty hot water bottles please.

December 9

Stuart won the money.

Don't forget to let me know about the 16th, we have four tee times and we probably only need two.

December 6

The misnamed Fun Game was won by SP and MP with an atmospheric score, so distant, I can't remember what it was, I'll guess at 89 - anyway it was more than anyone else. They won a bottle of champaign each. The grapes were trod by JF himself. PS, he doesn't take his socks off. Enjoy chaps!

December 2

Jerry took the money today with a commanding 39 points. Unusually, and oddly, he made most of his putts.

November 25

There were two 36 pointers today from CH and AD, the former left with the cash on count back. AD left to go on a dog walking competition around the UK coastline. No, he wont be back for Monday's game.

P.S. Three nil to KD at the snooker, SP and BS were a big help.

November 22

JF took the money today with 36 points, so his new one short on every hole handicap only lasted one week.

Money for our meal at the Crab should be paid next week please, except Rick, that is.

November 18

Money goes to money and today it went to BS, with a way out ahead 43 points. Well done Bill and good luck next week.

Check out the details of the next fun game.

November 15

Stuart took the money today with a decent 37 points, particularly so, given the awful state of the course.

November 11

Graham took the money today and he's probably placed it onshore by now.

Red Alert

Surrey CC’s delays in the works programme at the A331 junction with the A31 continue and according to our NF rep’ the junction will be completely closed for the next two weeks. So do not use the A331 for the Hogsback.

November 8

Well done to MN, he took the money again, with a very decent 38 points.

Don't forget to take a look at the menu for the Crab, and let KD know what you want.

November 4

Stuart was unabashed today to take the money with a hopeless 35 points. Anyone else would have put the money back in for a 'double up' next time.

November 1

Yellow Ball

Well done to MN and DL, they waltzed off with the wine today with a score of 86.

The rest of the field

AK/AD 79, MP/GD 78, CH/JT 73, KD/PT 67, JF/LF 49

October 28

Well done to MN, winning today with 36 points.

October 25

Nice to see AK's return to top form with 39 points, even if he doesn't know his handicap.

NB: Fun game details for Nov 1

October 21

SP won a whopping £2 pot with 32 points.

October 18

Well done to AD for his startling 35 point win. Don't worry your winnings are safe with me.

October 14

Well done to CH, who is now the holder of the John Tickle trophy. Craig took the day with 40 points. MN just missed out with 39 points.

Thanks to JT for supplying the beer.

October 11

Well done to AD and CH for taking some very nice wine today. Also, well done to everyone else, the standard today was good. Scores ranged from 42 down to 35.

AD/CH  42pts
JF/LF   40pts
GD/MP  38pts
KD/MN  37pts
SP/JT   36pts
PT/DL  35pts

October 7

Mike took the money with a decent 39 points. And a handicap cut - down to 19 now.

October 4

Stuart won with 40 points, since he has already congratulated himself, I wont bother.

30th Sept

Natural justice was once again restored by KD with a resounding 43 points. And wasn't it great to have the return of the wind at Hurtmore, how we've missed it.

27th Sept

Peggy took the money again but I have good news for everyone else - she's taking a week off next week. Obviously, this action is being taken to give lesser players a chance.

Rule Alert

Anchoring the Putter- Rule 10

23rd Sept

Well done Mike, 43 points. Are you on some new medication?

Slack Alert!

Stuart had to re-enter all the scores due an error on one of the cards. I could tell you the full unabridged story but it really is too awful to retell. However, I would ask all players to tell the marker clearly your strokes on the whole and the point score that applies. Also, at the end of the round take a look at the card before it is handed to Stuart.

20th Sept

Well done to Bill, winning with 39 points, he really does need the money and unlucky to Luigi, having been cheated by the absurdity of countback.

16th Sept

Well done to Peggy, who took the money with a great 37 points.

13th Sept

GD took the money today and became substantially richer. Personally, I think he showed far too much glee on receipt of his winnings. And worse, he removed KD from pole position in the OOM.

*****

9th Sept

Kendo made history today, he topped all three tables

*****

6th Sept

Well done to Craig and Luigi for winning Monday's Fun Day Competition.

*****

And an especial well done to the winners of our competition series: Michael took the OOM first prize, with LF and SP coming joint 2nd. Bill won the Eclectic, Mike came 2nd and AK was in 3rd place.
